Australian Lars Kleppich and New-Zealander Barbara Kendall won the titles after a fantastic week of races on the site ofCôte-Blanche in Nouméa. Eleven races have been run, for the women as for the boys, which is the maximum authorized from international rules. La bravura, la costanza dei piazzamenti e la determinazione nella vincita dell'undicesima ed ultima prova hanno portato l'australiano Lars Kleppich sul gradino più alto del podio davanti al fijiano Tony Philp (argento) e all'argentimo Marcos Galvan (bronzo) protagonista di una rimonta nelle ultime quattro prove. Scivolone in tredicesima posizione per il plurititolato Aaron Macimtosh giunto tredicesimo davanti all'azzurro Riccardo Giordano.

Lars Kleppich wins the title! Lars Kleppich of Australia didn't let up on Saturday 19, last day of the 1999 Mondial AOM. He won the title by claiming the last race, while Barbara Kendall of New Zealand, by now certain of keeping her title, did not compete. Its in the idyllic setting of Noumea's Côte Blanche that the 1999 Olympic sailboard World Championship came to a close. This '99 Mondial AOM brought together 156 competitors from 43 nations, and was a qualifying event for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. At the end of 11 races, Lars Kleppich of Australia claimed the men's World Champion title. Kleppich had been leading the overall score since Thursday. Once again, the Australian impressed everyone by strolling to an easy victory in the last race. He outsailed the 5 French competitors, and Tony Philp of Fiji, his most serious opponent for the title, simply could not catch up. Says Philp: "I did everything I could, but Lars was just too strong. Anyway, I am very happy to have the silver medal!". An all-new mens'podium Hard on the heels of his victory at the Sydney pre-Olympic week, Lars Kleppich won his first world title with panache. Lars was particularly impressive during the last day of the Mondial and one can easily understand his exuberance as he jumped on the beach after winning the last race: "I'm really thrilled to have become World Champion here, but I owe this victory to my coach Brendan Todd, the man who represented Australia at the Atlanta Olympics". Adds Kleppich: "It's been a beautiful Mondial, and I am delighted to have completed it like this, particularly as I am now practically assured of going to the Sydney 2000 Olympics". No doubt, sailing in his own waters, Lars will be a formidable contender for the Olympic gold. The podium of the Mondial AOM featured an all-new cast, particularly with the presence of Marcos Galvan of Argentina on the third step. Galvan secured his medal by outsailing Nikos Kaklamanakis of Greece (who finished 4th), gold medallist at the Atlanta Olympics. The first French contestant, Alexandre Guyader, placed 9th. The young European champion came in one small point ahead of the '97 and '98 world champion, Aaron McIntosh of New Zealand, who never managed to catch up after his disastrous showing on Friday. Two French women on the podium Already certain of keeping her world title, Barbara Kendall of New Zealand did not even compete in the last race, which was much to the liking of Faustine Merret of France who claimed her 5th victory and secured the silver. But the pleasant surprise for the French team came from Lise Vidal. A fifth place enabled her to overtake Natasha Sturges of Australia and claim the bronze. With two representatives on the podium, the French team fulfilled its obligations, and is in good position for the Sydney 2000 qualifying events of next month. |

uno strano punteggio medio; sono stato affonfdato alla partenza da due press boat
concludendo la prova in pessima posizione; la giuria pur avendo visto tutto mi ha soltanto
il 20% del piazzamento di quella prova anzicchè il vero punteggio medio; avrei potuto
finire ottavo." - ha dichiarato Riccardo Giordano alla conclusione del
Campionati - Il siciliano portacolori del club Albaria di Palermo, che aveva lasciato ben
sperare dopo le ottime prove di qualificazione, non è riuscito ad affiancare il suo
compagno-rivale di allenamenti Lars Kleppich (dominatore di questo mondiale, bronzo a
Barcellona, primo alla recente preolimpica di Sydney e vincitore della 14a edizione del
Windsurf World Festival davanti allo stesso Giordano). Fra le donne netta l'affermazione
di Barbara Kendall davanti alle francesi Faustine Merret (argento) e Lise Vidal (bronzo).
L'australiana Jessica Crisp, seconda fino alla penultima prova è stata scavalcata
nella classifica generale anche dalla connazionale Natasha Sturgers. Campionato da
"ricordare" per la rimonta di
