Michele Regolo wins Olympic Standard

There were 112 crews at the start for the Italy Cup leg in Mondello which
was added to the Windsurf World Festival 1999. Even though this date coincided with exam
period at University, the number remained high. So, like last year, competitors were
unloading the boats from their trailers until late into the night before the event, in a
kind of surreal atmosphere for normal regattas. The guys who were in Mondello for the
first time started noticing that there was something different about this event and the
events they were used to; something which typified their whole stay here. Unloading a
laser during Marina Reis concert, ending up both crushed by the crowds and dazed by
the buzz of the village which went on well into the early hours, clearly
bemused these Beginners!!
Apart from a never-ending meeting with the International Jury about certain parts of the
Regatta rules that had to be adapted for foreign competitors and about the course to use,
on Thursday June 3rd, everything is ready. No wind though, so theyve got to wait
anyway. At long last there are signs of white smoke coming from the Jury Meeting room;
theyve decided to use the traditional course instead of the new one from the Andora
leg which didnt get the expected results. Still no wind though so everythings
put off til tomorrow.
Its a different story on Friday morning. Everyones going mad. Theres
north westerly Maestrale wind with gusts of up to 35 knots and even after last
nights partying, the surfers are blasting around the Gulf of Mondello. The best of
the Lasers take to the water at the set time but the rest of the fleet just watch, bemused
from the shore. They stand around for hours waiting for the wind to drop so they can set
up the course. Never mind; they stick around on the beach and from the Beach Pavilion
watch what the windsurfers and hobiecatters are up to. Finally, in the late afternoon they
get to go on the water. Both the Laser Standard Class and the Olympic Class manage to get
started but not the Radial Class which is called back a number of times because of false
starts. So the day ends with only the Standard race taking place. Marco Infante comes
through, followed by Davide Bortoletto and Dario Maurizi. Starting favourite, Michele
Regolo gets disqualified and has to complete at least 3 other races so he can dump the
penalty.
At the weekend the wind finally calms down. A determined Regolo gets on the water and
shows what hes made of; his opponents can only watch as he takes 2 firsts. Meanwhile
in the packed Radial Class, intended for the lighter crews of women and younger
competitors, Salvatore Matracia from the Lauria Club excels. Taking advantage
of the fact that he knows the course so well, he wins the first race and comes 4th in the
second closely followed by Francesco Fiorentino and Salvatore DAmico. Lea Principato
wins for the Women.
On Sunday, in spite of the concerts and fireworks going on late into the night before, the
fleet is ready to get onto the water. The competitors have to compete in a minimum of 4
races in order to get rid of their worst scores. So at the scheduled time, theyre
off. In the Olympic Lasers, Regolo reaffirms his superiority, having only to keep an eye
on his opponents. He comes in 3rd and 4th leaving the podium to Infante and Bortoletto for
the days races. He ends this leg of the Italy Cup in first position with 9 points,
followed by Bortoletto with 11 and Infante with 13.
Its Marco Lo Bues day in the Laser Radial event. He finishes Sundays 2
races in first place and leaps forward in the placings. So at the end of all the races we
find Salvatore Matracia in the lead, followed by fellow club member, Marco Lo Bue and
Francesco Fiorentino. The favourite, Salvatore DAmico, has to settle for 4th place
overall. As for the Womens Event, a decisive victory for Lea Principato ahead of
Consuleo Sciuto and Enrica Monzani.
Although the wind was playing up, even the youngest competitors in the 4.7 Class managed
to complete their races. Francesca Angeli came out on top winning all the races in her
category of the leg. Last years positive experience with the inclusion of the
Lasers, was repeated this year, and the event counts as one of the 4 races for the Italy
Cup. After 5 races, Michele Regolo from Marche who was favourite from the start, confirmed
his supremacy over the 100+ competitors, achieving overall success in the Laser Standard
Olympic Class. In second position, Davide Bortoletto from Liguria who came in ahead of
Marco Infante from Bari. With a lot of young participants in the Radial Class, success
went to the Palermitan, Salvatore Matracia ahead of fellow club member, Marco Lo Bue. The
winner of last years contest and this years favourite, Salvatore DAmico,
came in fourth. Out of the youngsters competing in the 4.7 Class, Francesca Angelini from
Liguria was the first across the finishing line in front of the Sicilian Andrea Sorrentino
and Pierfrancesco Neri
