The Windsurf World Festival wasnt just sails, wind and water
though; it was sun and land (well, sand actually!) too. The sun which beat down on the
beach volleyball court for example, where, for the huge delight of the crowds,
professional players were competing in the first edition of the Sicily
        Cup.....

The Windsurf World Festival wasnt just sails, wind and water though; it was sun and
land (well, sand actually!) too. The sun which beat down on the beach volleyball court for
example, where, for the huge delight of the crowds, professional players were competing in
the first edition of the Sicily Cup. The Beach Volleyball tournament has
always accompanied the sailing competitions, but this year Albaria took the
initiative to develop it still further and the FIPAV (the Italian Volleyball Federation)
took charge of the organisation. Dionisio Lequaglie was among the Italians and with 269
appearances for the National team is one of the pioneers of Beach Volleyball in Italy.
Together with Gianni Mascagna (9 appearances with Velascos legendary National team)
they were the favourites for the Italian Championship. As well as the Austrian champions,
Leitner-Dobeiner and Shroffenegger-Nowotny, the Festival was host to the biggest names
        from France: Canet-Hamel and Deulofeu-Guissard.
Also present were 4 of Palermos best volleyball players : Rossi-Spada and
Modica-Vicini who play in the Iveco Palermo A1 league. During this years
championships, they had had to play out of the city due to the lack of a suitable stadium
and so took this opportunity to perform in front of the local crowd. By beating Di
Falco-Tornambe in the qualifiers, Nasta-Sposimo earned a place in the prestigious
final round. Big names for a European level tournament which again attracted hundreds of
spectators who watched the all-French final from the grandstand and the beach. And who
could forget Bitto, the excellent contest commentator, cheering and urging
everyone on. The Sicily Cup went to Deulofeu-Guissard who, from the first
touches of the ball, clearly dominated their opponents, Rossi-Spada. In fact without
losing a single match, the couple reached the grand final where, losing just 1 set, 15-12,
they beat Canet-Hamel, 15-10. A little less consistent was the Italian,
Lequaglie-Mascagna, performance; they were hampered by Lequaglies painful shoulder
and finished 3rd after having gone down 15-11 to their cousins from the other side of the
        Alps, Canet-Hamel.
